Remember – what you see, is only the tip of the iceberg. There’s lots below that either drives that iceberg, or supports it, or makes it able to shine.
When observing anything – a process, people in the workplace, performance – you only see the outward facing data. Years of experience, practices, miles in the rain, often go unnoticed. Unless you dig a bit deeper. Go diving below the surface. Crack the iceberg open, ask some questions.
So next time you feel like you’re the only one doing stuff, the only one contributing, the only one with the skills to perform – remember the iceberg. Remember the tip of the iceberg. It’s often misleading, or not well represented, all the things that make it float. I remind myself of this every day.
