Working...

Working hard to prep for the new semester. Created a bunch of documents, and a student survey today. So far, on pace. School starts next Monday - students arrive in my room on Wednesday. Hope they're ready. I will be!

Almost time for a new semester to begin...

Getting ready for the new semester... exciting, and nervwrecking at the same time!

State of Students today...

“Students today depend upon store bought ink. They don’t know how to make their own. When they run out of ink they will be unable to write words or ciphers until their next trip to the settlement. This is a sad commentary on modern education.”

Website Updates

I have added a new section to econ, for chapter resources. Trying to build up the online library of handouts, practice problems, etc. there. Also removed some old stuff from history that was clogging up the site export. Continuing to streamline the web experience, and removing steps for the user to access materials.

On Haiti, from TIME Magazine...

Here's what's on the ground in the debris of the Haitian earthquake: on Rue Pavee, downtown, an empty can of motor oil, some black piping, a turned dowel, empty blue medicine bottles, shards of ancient plywood, empty water bags, and a crushed brass candelabra. Then, after a turn onto Grande Rue ("This was the Wall Street of Haiti," says Franco Petruzzelli, an Italian businessman who is watching his hardware store across the street) there are O rings of all sizes, scattered blue fan guards, old computers, a box for an Oster blender, orange peels. Broom heads and eyeglass frames dot the hills of strewn brick and cement block. Petruzzelli has hired four security guards to ward off opportunistic salvagers; and, yesterday, Petruzzelli leased a warehouse at the edge of town where he's going to send all his stuff.

Is GDP An Obsolete Measure of Progress?

ince last summer the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has gone up — indeed, it grew at a surprising 5.7% rate in the 4th quarter — seeming to confirm what we've been hearing: the recession is officially over. But wait — foreclosure and unemployment rates remain high, and food banks are seeing record demand. Could it be that the GDP, that gold standard of economic data, might not be the best way to gauge a nation's relative prosperity?

Econ Books!

Please bring your books this week, no later than the exam.

Extra Credit available for US Hist

Use the standards that were handed out in class, and create one flash card for each sub-standard, i.e. 1a, 1b, etc...

Flash cards must be neat, full of information, and highly organized, and must have your name on them. They should preferably be numbered as well. Show your cards to me some time before your midterm exam for some extra credit.

Midterm / Final Exams

Please make sure you study for the midterm / final exams. They are not to be taken lightly!
